Q – quantity identification; N – numeral identification; Q/N –
quantity and numeral association; AD – addition and SU - subtraction

The difficulty in quantity recognition (Q) was negatively associated (figure
4 and table V) with BW (birth weight) and positively correlated with A (substance
abuse), S (maternal stress), B (neonatal breath problems), and T (age of beginning
to talk). The difficulty in numeral identification was positively associated
with the age of beginning to walk (W) and inversely associated with P (the
age of beginning to use phrases). The difficulty in associating quantities
to numerals (Q/N) was positively correlated with the difficulty in recognizing
quantities (Q) and numerals (N) and it was negatively associated with the
familiar indices of mental retardation (MR) and psychiatric problems. The
addition difficulty (AD) was positively correlated (figure 4 and table VI)
with W (age of beginning to walk), WR (difficulty in work recognition), Q/N
(difficulty in associating quantity to numerals) and the familiar indices
LD (learning disabilities) and MR (mental retardation). The subtraction difficulty
(SU) was positively associated (figure 4 and table VI) with WR, Q/N and LD
and inversely associated with MR.
